What is Allens Test?

Allen’s test is a medical sign and it’s used in physical examination of arterial blood circulation in hands. and it’s founder’s name is Edgar Van Nuys Allen he has described the test in 1929. with its original version.

➤ The test is done to check the patency of blood circulation in the hand and fingers by radial and ulnar artery.

➤ Before doing the procedure prepare the patient’s hand clean And dry the palm to see the color,

➤ Then mark the radial & ulnar artery by the marker.

➤ After the marking of both arteries, the patient should be sitting in a sitting position and his elbow twist at a 90-degree angle.

➤ Then the patient hand is elevated and the patient is asked to clench their fist for about 30 seconds to 1 minute.

➤ After the clenching fist, the pressure is applied by our thumb over both arteries to occlude the circulation.

➤ Say to the patient to open his fist and see the palm and nails color is pale. Then release ulnar artery pressure, and radial artery pressure is applied to continue as before. then assess the color if the palm is become rad within 5 to 10 seconds the indignation is Allen test normal. if color is failing in return then the abnormal indignation as suspect the ulnar artery does not supply a sufficient amount of blood in hand.
